This former grassed batter was transformed as a comfortable, shaded and flexible outdoor gathering area for recess, lunch and learning activities. Sculptural concrete seating walls with artificial turf terracing create a vibrant and functional seating space. The materials deliver a low maintenance and robust solution.

Terrace depths were set to allows the students to sit in groups cross legged, leaning up against the back wall or sitting on the front edge. Heights, typically lower than standard seating terraces to accommodate children’s proportions, deliver variation for ages as the structure sinks into the existing long grade.

Blue recycled plastic battens are integrated into the off white concrete structure to visually break the linear form and add complimentary colour and fun with the vibrant green grass.

A new stair gives a more direct connection from the playground to the lower main terrace and a linear planter along the upper terrace edge creates a lush backdrop.
