Date2010 - 2011

Driven by global demand for the resources of the Bowen Basin, the Mackay Region experienced significant growth over a prolonged period. While delivering welcomed prosperity, rapid growth presents many challenges to the region and drove the need to consider how best to direct urban expansion and achieve the most efficient, sustainable and liveable urban environment.

The Ooralea area is one of the identified growth areas within the region. Lat27 were engaged to undertake a major investigation into the urban expansion of the 1800ha precinct, which included:

  • Preparation of a comprehensive contextual and site analysis;
  • Engagement with key stakeholders and land owners;
  • Facilitation of a major enquiry-by-design process to investigate the development potential and conceptual structure;
  • Development a preferred structure plan; and
  • Development supporting planning and urban design strategies.

Subsequent to the Ooralea EBD and in support of MRC’s local area planning process, Lat27 prepared indicative designs and supporting urban design strategies for the future major centre and a typical neighbourhood. The studies draw on best practice urban design principles tailored to the tropical context.
